The Gouden Carolus Ambrio was tasted at the brewery’s on site brasserie ( tap). Beer head was perfect. Colour looked darker then on the official picture of the brewery.
Very authentic taste, well balanced with fine (belgian) hops. It is a full body beer but not aggressive in taste which makes it very drinkable although the amount of alcohol is reasonably high. We had this beer as lunch and had it accompanied with stew and french fries ( in dutch “stoofvlees met frietjes”) and this was a perfect combination.
This type of beer was very popular in Flanders at the beginning of the 20th century and like most cities Mechelen had their own “brown beer” known as “Mechelsen Bruinen”
