On the last Saturday of January we made a visit to the Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie. The very sympathetic brewer/owner took the time to tell the story of Seefbier and the creation of the brewery. It is located in a former “pershuis” where steam was produced to make the harbor installations work.
Johan Van Dijck, a former marketing manager at Duvel Moortgat got the idea to find and brew the old Seefbeer again. It disappeared after the First World war but was very popular untill then. It was typically brewed by local and small breweries. Therefore documentation was scarce. After years of searching he managed to produce the beer again and it became an instant success.
This lead to the idea of brewing himself instead of using another brewery. The brewery was funded via a big Crowfunding campaign. The biergarten is located in the middle of the brewery with a view on the brewing process.
Definitely worth a visit while in Antwerp.
